Matthias Waldeck

I automatically associate every sound and noise with a colour and shape in my mind’s eye

My name is Matthias Waldeck and I am a photographer. In addition to photography, I also explore other artistic fields. I prefer landscape and flower photography, but I’m also very interested in minimalist photography. These structural photos are the result of my synesthesia, the ability to hear colors, or audio-color synesthesia. I automatically associate every sound and noise with a colour and shape in my mind’s eye. A large portion of my photos and my paintings consist of such structures.

Glissando

When a glissando is played on a string instrument, the brown wool thread transforms into an almost white, jagged, narrow band. This band is usually almost smooth on the left, while on the right it appears jagged or torn – similar to this photo.

Seven-Tone Sound John Cage Halberstadt

In this digitally produced image, the movement is frozen. My synesthetic sensation can be seen when I hear the continuous tone of the organ in Halberstadt’s Burchardi Church. John Cage wrote a piano piece that is stretched to 639 years on this organ (ASLSP – As Slow As Possible). A single note or chord from this sonata can be heard for up to two years. I would perceive this synesthetic image unchanged over this period.
