María José de Córdoba Serrano is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in engraving, painting and video. She is a Doctor of Fine Arts and a professor at the University of Granada. She has published several books on synaesthesia including, Synesthesia: Theoretical, Artistic and Scientific Foundations (2012), and is considered an expert on the subject in Spain. She has investigated synaesthesia alongside her artistic practice of engraving, experimental materials and printing since the 1980s. She is currently responsible for the Research Group: Synaesthesia and Creativity, Applied Interdisciplinary Research. In Spain, she has directed several international congresses on “Synaesthesia, Science and Art” and run summer courses on synaesthetic art education.
In 2009 she received the Medal of Merit of Fine Arts awarded by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Nuestra Sra. De las Angustias. She has participated in the dissemination of scientific documentaries for Televisión Andaluza and Televisión Española; radio programs, as well as international scientific media and received national and international awards. Her work is held in cultural institutions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, the Spanish National library, the Hermitage Museum in Belarus and the Museum of Contemporary Engraving in Spain.
